The Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance (SMIA) unifies academic researchers, national labs and industry to advance the manufacturing sector’s role in a circular economy.
The key focus area of SMIA is Reducing EMbodied-energy And Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) in Materials Manufacturing. As the consumption of materials grows, the embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions footprint associated with the production of these materials have become more evident.
SMIA is committed to the development of cutting-edge sustainable manufacturing technologies and accelerating the adoption of these technologies to make real, near-term environmental and economic impacts. We believe through thoughtful, innovative design, efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes, and the reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling of materials today, we can ensure a continued supply of materials for the products we will need and use tomorrow.
